The Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC) has held talks with Huawei Technologies on expanding rural telephony services, as Ghana pushes to close connectivity gaps in underserved communities.

The discussions took place on the sidelines of the Mobile World Congress 2026 in Barcelona, where both sides explored new technologies to strengthen the country’s Rural Telephony Project.

GIFEC’s delegation was led by its Administrator and Chief Executive Officer, Tanko Rashid Computer, while Huawei’s team was headed by Li Junfeng, Vice President of the company and CEO of its Global Public Sector Business Unit.

Huawei presented upgraded rural telephony solutions, including new-generation masts designed to improve connectivity in remote areas through more reliable infrastructure capable of supporting voice and data services. The company said the systems could enhance network quality and significantly extend coverage in hard-to-reach communities.

The presentation gave the Ghanaian delegation insights into how the technology could improve access in areas that currently have limited or no telecommunications services.

Rashid-Computer said the engagement formed part of GIFEC’s broader strategy to expand connectivity nationwide, stressing that strengthening the Rural Telephony Project remained a top priority.

“Improving rural connectivity is critical to ensuring that citizens in underserved and remote communities benefit from reliable digital communication services,” he said.

He added that enhanced infrastructure would support the rollout of 3G and 4G services, opening up access to digital opportunities, information, and broader socio-economic development.

The meeting underscores GIFEC’s push to build partnerships with global technology firms to accelerate Ghana’s digital transformation and bridge the digital divide.
